by Finding Hope: Mental Health Education and Support
According to Wikipedia, International Men’s Day (IMD), celebrated annually on November 19, “is a global awareness day for many issues that men face, including parental alienation, abuse, homelessness, suicide, and violence.
The objectives of celebrating an International Men’s Day are set out in ‘All the Six Pillars of International Men’s Day’. It is also an occasion to celebrate boys’ and men’s lives, achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to nation, union, society, community, family, marriage, and childcare”.
Looking back at previous themes, the focus of International Men’s Day has consistently highlighted the importance of addressing specific needs and challenges for men and boys:
2011: “Giving Boys the Best Possible Start in Life”
2012: “Helping Men and Boys Live Longer, Happier and Healthier Lives”
2013: “Keeping Men and Boys Safe”
2014: “Working Together for Men and Boys”
2015: “Working to Expand Reproductive Options for Men”
2016: “Stop Male Suicide”
For International Men’s Day 2024, two themes guide our reflections. Globally, Men’s Health Champions focuses on the importance of promoting positive male role models and supporting men’s health needs. In the UK, the theme Positive Male Role Models places emphasis on men’s mental health, redefined masculinity, and the valuable impact of positive male influences.
Men’s Health Champions: Breaking the Silence on Men’s Health
The global theme of “Men’s Health Champions” is a call to action to recognize the role of positive male figures who advocate for men’s health. Research shows that men are more reluctant than women to seek help for mental health issues, often due to societal expectations around masculinity and strength. This reluctance can lead to serious health consequences, including high rates of suicide and untreated mental health conditions.
Being a Men’s Health Champion goes beyond awareness, it’s about taking proactive steps to foster healthier lives. This can be as simple as starting conversations about well-being or as impactful as promoting community health resources designed for men. Addressing men’s health holistically means understanding that mental and physical health are interconnected. It’s time to break down the stigma surrounding men’s health issues and normalize discussions about preventive care, regular checkups, and mental health support.
Here are ways we can all become Men’s Health Champions:
o Promote Regular Health Checks
o Advocate for Mental Health
o Educate on Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Positive Male Role Models: Building a Healthier Future for Men and Boys
The UK theme of Positive Male Role Models brings to light the importance of positive male influences, especially for younger generations. Positive male role models help shape boys’ values, character, and aspirations. They demonstrate that strength comes not only from physical attributes but also from kindness, empathy, and emotional intelligence.
The modern concept of masculinity is evolving, and men today are encouraged to embrace their emotions, seek help when needed, and support each other openly. Positive male role models can be found in all areas of life—from fathers, brothers, and teachers to coaches, mentors, and community leaders. These individuals play a crucial role in promoting values like respect, integrity, and compassion, providing a guiding light for boys navigating the complexities of growing up in today’s world.
To foster positive male role models, we can:
•Encourage Open Conversations
•Celebrate Achievements Beyond Stereotypes
•Promote Healthy Relationships
Moving Forward: Celebrating and Supporting Men
International Men’s Day 2024 encourages us to honor men who champion health and well-being and inspire positive change. As we celebrate men’s lives and contributions, let’s also renew our commitment to addressing the unique challenges they face. By fostering healthy conversations around men’s health and uplifting male role models, we can create a society that supports and values men as they truly are.
This year, let’s champion men’s health and celebrate positive male role models—not only on this
day but throughout the year. Together, we can build a future where every man and boy has the
support, respect, and recognition they deserve.
